Prospect Park NJ, Municipal leaders in Prospect Park are calling for the immediate resignation of Council President Anand Shah, who was recently charged in connection with an organized crime-linked gambling ring.

Shah, 42, a three-term Democrat on the borough’s governing body, faces serious charges including racketeering, conspiracy, money laundering, and various gambling-related offenses. According to authorities, Shah was allegedly involved in a complex criminal enterprise that also included members of the Lucchese crime family and 38 other individuals.

Mayor Khairullah: “Step Down for the Good of Prospect Park”

Mayor Mohamed Khairullah issued a public statement Monday, urging Shah to not only resign from his council position but also to withdraw from the upcoming June primary ballot.

“This moment calls for leadership that prioritizes the needs of the people, above all else,” Khairullah wrote in a post shared on his official Facebook page. “Stepping down is not an act of abandonment — it’s a recognition that the continued focus must remain on serving Prospect Park without disruption.”

Khairullah emphasized that the community deserves undivided leadership and accountability, especially in the wake of such serious legal allegations.

Charges Stem from Major Two-Year Investigation

New Jersey Attorney General Matthew Platkin announced the charges last Friday, capping off a two-year investigation that targeted organized crime and gambling operations across the state. Platkin stated that his office is “bringing every resource available to crack down on violent criminals,” including those embedded in illegal gambling rings.

The allegations have cast a shadow over Prospect Park’s local government, prompting residents and officials alike to call for swift action and integrity from elected leaders.

What Happens Next?

As legal proceedings unfold, all eyes will be on Shah’s next move — and whether he will heed the mayor’s call to step down. The Borough Council has not yet announced plans to fill the seat should a resignation occur.

  1. What happened to the America where the bedrock of our legal system was innocent until proven guilty? Accused now equates to convicted.
