Ridgewood NJ, the “Latest News and Events” e-mail notice from the Village of Ridgewood confirms the recent discovery and identification of four (4) separate chemical substances on Village owned property located at 460 West Saddle River Road, Ridgewood (a.k.a. the Schedler property).

The below listed chemical substances were present at levels exceeding established New Jersey Department of Environmental Protect (NJDEP) standards for “residential direct contact:”
  • Lead
  • Mercury
  • Benz[a]anthracene
  • Benz[a]pyrene
The John A. L. Zabriskie House is located on the property noted above, 460 West Saddle River Road, Ridgewood. Tours of this historic structure are being offered to pre-scheduled members of the public on Saturday, June 8th, 11:00 am to 2:00 pm.

Because members of the public may come in contact with contaminated soil during their visit, The Ridgewood Blog highly recommends the use of disposable shoe covers while walking on the property.
Packs of 12 are available at Home Depot or Lowes for just under $10.00. We suspect that Home Hardware in Waldwick may also carry them.
Don’t be sorry later, be safe now instead.

  1. Home Depot also carries very fashionable, yellow three layer chemical splash overalls with a hood.

    1. Does it have extra large pockets for iodine tablets?

  2. Cancel the event

  3. Matrix’s exact words were, “It is not a health concern at this time, just because of the use of the property. You know, this is an unoccupied property right now.”

VOR is holding tours there TODAY! The property is being used by the public as a nature scape. WildScape Ridgewood provided a walking tour.

Put up a sign warning the public that Schedler is a contaminated site.

  4. Village Manager should put up a sign to warn the public. They already know remediation is needed, the bonded for it. Why does this group always fail?

    1. Keith will only do what Pee Wee Tells him to do.. He’s a Puppet

  5. I can’t believe they are still going through with the tour knowing this is a contaminated site. And they still don’t know to what extent because they wasted months testing only the berm, rather than doing the entire parcel as mandated.

  6. They need to test it entire land, because that soil has been utilized throughout the site to fill in low line areas to level off the property. Doesn’t matter they could cover that whole land with brand new Astroturf or put 4 inches of fresh clean topsoil on top of it. The bottom line is the chemical contaminants will still come through. Don’t let anybody bullshit you that they are many secret meetings behind the curtain.

  7. We expect a full list of employees that was working on that site from multiple departments, past and present. This should be broadcasted and documented the site. Can’t be that safe if they’re putting on rubber shoe coverings. So obviously they don’t want you walking in it, touching it,digging into it, and so on. So what are they telling you?

    1. Any word on the contaminated soil At Habernickel. I read earlier?

  8. Will be used as an excuse to raze the structure and build a parking garage.
