Half a million undocumented immigrants living in the Garden State contribute an estimated $587 million in taxes; aggressive deportation policy could hurt state and local budgets

New Jersey has one of the nation’s largest undocumented-immigrant populations, and the aggressive federal-deportation policy launched by President Donald Trump in recent weeks has sparked a widespread debate among state and local officials about public safety and human rights.

But a new national study that looks only at the tax contributions of undocumented immigrants suggests New Jersey could be among the states with the most to lose financially if Trump’s new deportation effort starts targeting more than just the very small group of immigrants who pose the most serious threat to public safety and national security.

As a group, New Jersey’s undocumented immigrant population contributes an estimated $587.4 million to the state and local governments via income, property and sales taxes, according to the Washington, D.C.-based Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy. That total tax haul ranks sixth-highest among U.S. states, behind only California, Texas, New York, Illinois and Florida, according to the study, which was released this morning.

  1. Contribute 587.4 million. How many billions do they use?

  2. And how many billions do they cost indirectly? By this, I mean unemployment and other welfare payments to legal residents who have been put out of work by the illegals. As for these illegals paying income taxes, that is an absolute lie. They simply do not pay income taxes. They are paid cash off the books.

  3. Ask any of the ‘undocumented’ workers you see if they get a paycheck with all taxes withheld.

    Yeah

  4. Those who are here should be allowed to stay, if they are not criminals, and should be given a path to citizenship. That is the only humane solution.

  5. What really needs to happen to stop this is to investigate the businesses that hire illegals. Look at the day laborers – they are hungry for work and will work hard. Joe Smoe picks them up, pays them cash if they are lucky and avoids paying workers comp, and the employers’ share of taxes. If they are injured they are on their own – charity care at a local emergency room? How many times do I see leaf blowers going without the proper protective eyewear? And, the day laborers often get stiffed by Joe Smoe. This happens in construction, too. Joe Smoe needs to do the right thing and hire only documented workers and pay his share of business expenses and taxes too! It is time our elected officials put some real thought into a “path to citizenship” and employer sponsorships. Also, look at the IT industry – HB1s are cheap labor and outsourcing is common practice.,

  6. The only thing that will be lost is democratic votes.

  7. Bullshit. I keep hearing how illegals contribute to the economy via taxes. What taxes? They get paid off the books, in cash most of the time and since they’re illegal they don’t have a SSN and hence can’t even file taxes. Even worse when tax time comes many of them use fake SSN and get more money in return due their declared low income. A lot are registered with Medicaid which covers 100% of medical expenses while legal citizens pay a lot for health insurance and have high copays. So the illegals contribute through taxes when buying chinese food and clothing at Walmart? Whatever they contribute costs 1000 times more to maintain them not mention cheating with tax returns etc. However for some reason nobody calls these facts on TV.

  8. #DayWithoutImmigrants
    .
    How dishonest.
    .
    Try #DayWithoutCriminals

  9. 5:58 you pose a good question. $587,000,000 divided by 500,000 illegal immigrants equals $1,174 per person. I pay 7 times that to the state alone. Their return on investment is remarkable.
