Driver in Route 17 North Collision With Parked Tractor Trailer, Charged with Drug and Assault Charges

Paramus NJ, Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella announced the arrest of DAVIL LAFONTANT (DOB: 03/12/1998; single; unemployed) of 4 Sidley Drive, Nanuet, New York on charges of Aggravated Assault, Assault By Auto, and Possession With Intent To Distribute Marijuana and Hashish edibles and oils. The arrest is the result of an investigation conducted by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office under the direction of Chief Robert Anzilotti and the Paramus Police Department under the direction of Chief Kenneth Ehrenberg.

At approximately 1:12 a.m. on April 17, 2021, while on patrol on Route 17 North, a Paramus Police Officer came upon a motor vehicle collision in front of 172 Route 17 North. The officer located a 2019 Dodge Charger which had collided with the side of a tractor trailer that was parked within the right shoulder of the highway. The driver of the Dodge Charger, Davil LAFONTANT, and a 20-year-old female passenger were both transported to Hackensack University Medical Center for treatment of their injuries. The female passenger suffered serious bodily injury and remains hospitalized in stable condition, while LAFONTANT had minor injuries and was released from the hospital. Two additional passengers, a 21-year-old female and a 22-year-old male, were uninjured.

As a result of the investigation, on April 20, 20021, LAFONTANT was charged with Aggravated Assault, in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:12-1(b), a 2nd degree crime; Possession With Intent To Distribute Hashish, specifically THC edibles and THC vape cartridges, in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:35-5b(10)(a), a 2nd degree crime; Assault By Auto, in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:12-1c(2), a 3rd degree crime; and Possession With Intent To Distribute Marijuana, in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:35-5b(11), a 3rd degree crime. In addition, he was served with motor vehicle summonses for Driving While Intoxicated, in violation of N.J.S.A. 39:4-50, Reckless Driving, in violation of N.J.S.A. 39:4-96, and Speeding, in violation of N.J.S.A. 39:4-98. LAFONTANT is scheduled for a first appearance in Central Judicial Processing Court in Hackensack, NJ on Friday, May 7, 2021.

Prosecutor Musella states that the charges are merely accusations and that the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt, and he would like to thank the Paramus Police Department and the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance in this investigation.
