Dumont NJ, on a Sunday earlier this month , the driver Side door of one of a Dumont Volunteer Ambulance Corps ambulance was struck by a motorist as one of our EMTs was exiting the vehicle after arriving on scene. Consequently, a second of their ambulances had to be called into service to transport the patient, and then another 9-1-1 was dispatched shortly thereafter with their primary rig going out of service.
The ambulance was parked in front of the patient’s house while a Dumont Police car was parked across this particular residential street. To say that our EMT escaped without injury is an understatement. She was lucky, and we were lucky. The greatest fear any of us have is the injury or death of one of our own in the process of delivering pre-hospital care.

This motorist should have exercised caution as they drove through this ‘scene’, which was flanked by two first responder vehicles.
In New Jersey, there is a ‘Move Over Law’ when drivers approach stationary emergency vehicles displaying red, blue and/or amber flashing lights. They must move over one lane or, if not safe to move over, then slow down below the posted speed limit. Please be cautious when you approach such a scene, and tell others.
