Englewood NJ, in a concerning turn of events, Dwight-Englewood schools have been closed on Wednesday following the discovery of a racist and threatening message on school property. Head of School Jeremy Gregersen addressed the school community via email, shedding light on the ongoing investigation and the steps being taken to ensure the safety of students and staff.
According to Gregersen’s email, the disturbing message, which threatened the entire community and targeted the Black and LatinX population, was found on the wall of the boys’ bathroom adjacent to the Middle/Upper School Library. The gravity of the situation prompted immediate action, with the Englewood Police Department and Bergen County Sheriff’s Office launching an investigation.
Authorities are currently examining video evidence from cameras around the library building and conducting interviews with students who were on campus at the time of the incident. Additionally, the possibility of involving a handwriting expert and other law enforcement agencies has been raised to aid in the investigation.
The decision to close the school on Wednesday was made to prioritize safety precautions and allow ample time for the investigation to progress. Gregersen emphasized the importance of providing faculty and staff with the necessary resources to support students during what he described as a “fraught and frightening moment.”
While the specifics of the threat have not been disclosed at this time, the school community has been reassured that every effort is being made to address the situation effectively. This closure follows a previous incident involving racist remarks made by seventh-grade students in a text message chat back in March, which had also garnered attention from the school administration.
As a result of the closure, all sports, rehearsals, and afterschool activities have been canceled and will need to be rescheduled. Furthermore, plans for enhanced security measures are being developed by school leaders to ensure a safe environment for students upon their return.
Gregersen reiterated the school’s unwavering commitment to the safety and well-being of its students and community, emphasizing a zero-tolerance policy towards such behavior. While plans are underway to reopen on Thursday, the school remains vigilant in its efforts to address and prevent instances of discrimination and harassment within its community.

I have personally witnessed racial talk and joking going on. The individuals know where they are. I’m watching them. Next time I’m not going to the manager or the council mayor, I’m going straight to channel 12 news with proof.
