Edgewater NJ, two teenagers were rescued in New Jersey after flash flooding swept through Bergen County and the two became trapped inside an abandoned rail tunnel that became flooded.

Officials say the teens got stuck in an old train tunnel in Edgewater when the water started rising quickly. The tunnel is known to locals as “Devil’s Hole.” It is a mile-long abandoned rail tunnel that once belonged to the New York, Susquehanna and Western Railroad. It hasn’t been in use since 1960.

Emergency crews received the 911 call around 4:30 p.m. for help off River Road. Edgewater firefighters Thomas Quinton and Robert Jacobson who put on their cold-water gear, grabbed a boat and went inside to find the teens. The firefighters swam in and pulled the two kids out of the tunnel — after they’d reportedly been inside the tunnel for several hours.

Officials say that the teens were exploring the site, which has become a popular “Weird New Jersey” attraction. It is said to be the only rail tunnel ever built under a cemetery. The other end of the tunnel leads into the property of the Fairview Cemetery, which is where the teens entered.

“They said they were in the tunnel for about two hours. They’d seen something on the internet where they wanted to explore the tunnel,” Lt. Robert Jacobsen said. “Just think before you do things, especially with the weather outside.”

  1. Stupid kids. Parents should be held accountable.

  2. Scariest local photo I’ve seen in years! Weird New Jersey is right!
