Washington DC, when it comes to reducing federal spending, even skeptics are willing to embrace bold ideas. Enter DOGE, the newly established Department of Government Efficiency, helmed by none other than Elon Musk and former presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy. With a mission to slash trillions from federal budgets, this “outside-of-government” task force is finding tentative allies on Capitol Hill, including some Democratic lawmakers.

What Is DOGE?

President-elect Donald Trump entrusted Musk and Ramaswamy with DOGE, an initiative designed to identify wasteful federal spending and recommend sweeping cuts. Their target list includes remote work policies for federal employees, cumbersome regulations, and programs they believe have outlived their purpose.

The duo made headlines with an op-ed in The Wall Street Journal, where they described DOGE as a chance for “structural reductions in the federal government” while preparing for opposition from entrenched Washington interests.

Mixed Reception on Capitol Hill

DOGE has enthusiastic backing from Republicans, but Democrats are approaching the initiative more cautiously. Some, like Ohio Rep. Greg Landsman, see potential for bipartisan collaboration. “Why wouldn’t you want to be in the room?” Landsman asked, suggesting common ground on eliminating waste and duplication.

Landsman and Florida Rep. Jared Moskowitz are the first Democrats to join the Congressional DOGE Caucus, led by Republicans Sen. Rick Scott and Rep. Aaron Bean. As of this week, at least 40 lawmakers have signed on, according to Punchbowl News.

However, Democrats remain wary of proposals to target programs like Medicare or Social Security.

Key Areas of Debate

Musk and Ramaswamy have floated drastic measures, including eliminating entire agencies like the Department of Education and cutting funding for groups such as Planned Parenthood. Critics worry these recommendations will disproportionately affect programs supported by Democrats.

But some Democrats are using DOGE to highlight their own priorities:

  • Rep. Jared Moskowitz: Opposes defunding veterans’ programs and the Education Department but supports moving agencies like FEMA and the Secret Service out of the Department of Homeland Security.
  • Sen. Bernie Sanders: Not a DOGE member, but agrees with Musk on the need to audit Pentagon spending, especially programs like the costly F-35 fighter jet.
  • Rep. Ro Khanna: Advocates for reducing defense spending waste, citing prior success in reclaiming $16.1 million in excess profits from contractors.

A Moonshot or a Pipe Dream?

While DOGE is still in its early days, its mission to rethink federal spending has ignited conversation across the aisle. Whether this initiative leads to meaningful reform or sparks more political infighting remains to be seen.

One thing is certain: with figures like Musk and Ramaswamy at the helm, DOGE will continue to make waves in Washington.
