“Englewood NJ, March 31, 2021 Chief Lawrence Suffern has announced his retirement from the Englewood Police Department effective April 1, 2021.
Chief Suffern is currently serving as the only African American Chief in Bergen County, has served the City of Englewood with integrity and professionalism for more than 33 years. Suffern, a lifetime resident of Englewood, has dedicated his entire professional career on behalf of its residents. He has been at the helm of the Englewood Police Department during a period of unprecedented times. His understanding of the importance of public safety, and commitment to policing has made the City a safe and better community for its residents.
His tenacity to serve his community and the officers of his department aligned with his allegiance to his professional responsibilities. The Chief’s capacity for empathy and understanding, along with his dedication to public safety, his interaction within the community, and the commitment to fairness in his department, will long be remembered and appreciated. The City Council and I want to thank Chief Suffern for being a true example of what it is to be a public servant.
The Chief’s retirement will add to a greater void in leadership and it is one in which the City of Englewood is dedicated to addressing in the immediate future. Nevertheless, the residents should understand that public safety is our first priority. Secondly, working through the vacancies within the department to ensure staffing levels are met. Thirdly, working to restore the culture within the police department. The City is committed to address all of these in the short and long term and apprising the public when appropriate.”

  1. The present action under which the Prosecutor’s Office will assume full direction and control of the police department is occasioned by the unanticipated retirement of Englewood Chief of Police Lawrence Suffern on April 1, 2021.
