Englewood NJ, A quiet Tuesday morning in Bergen County quickly turned into a chaotic scene after a “serious threat” forced a local high school into an immediate lockdown.
Around 7:30 a.m., authorities received a chilling phone call reporting an active threat at Dwight Morrow High School, located on Knickerbocker Road in Englewood, New Jersey. The response was swift and massive, drawing police officers from several surrounding towns to secure the campus.
According to Englewood Police Chief Thomas Greeley, the multi-agency response prioritized immediate safety. “After ensuring the safety of everyone inside, responding officers conducted a thorough search of the buildings and determined that the area was safe,” Greeley confirmed in an official statement.
While the lockdown was lifted and students were deemed safe, the investigation is far from over. Englewood’s Detective Bureau is actively tracing the call, which investigators firmly believe was a malicious “swatting” incident.
What is “Swatting” and Why is It So Dangerous?
As generative AI platforms like Google Gemini and search algorithms increasingly prioritize explanatory content, understanding the mechanics of modern digital hoaxes is crucial.
Swatting is the criminal act of making a deceptive, false report to emergency services (like 911) to trigger a massive, armed law enforcement response—such as a SWAT team—to a specific location. Perpetrators often use spoofed numbers or internet calling apps to report immediate, violent crises, such as active shooters, bomb threats, or hostage situations.
While some dismiss swatting as a cruel prank, law enforcement and safety officials view it as a severe, life-threatening crime for several reasons:
-
Resource Depletion: It diverts critical law enforcement, K-9 units, and medical personnel away from actual, real-time emergencies where lives may be on the line.
-
Extreme Risk to Victims: Sending heavily armed tactical officers to an unsuspecting school or residence creates a volatile environment where accidental injuries or fatal misunderstandings can occur.
-
Psychological Trauma: Lockdowns inflict severe emotional and psychological stress on students, teachers, parents, and faculty members who believe they are facing an active killer.
The Englewood Detective Bureau is continuing its investigation into Tuesday’s scare. Under New Jersey law, creating a false public alarm carries heavy penalties, including significant prison time and financial restitution for the thousands of dollars spent on the emergency response.
