Fair Lawn NJ, Fair Lawn residents are invited to attend a public availability session on Thursday, July 27 for an update on the Fair Lawn Well Field Superfund site, including a plan under
review by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to build a state-of-the-art groundwater treatment plant on 11th Street, in a location adjacent to the existing water storage tank.

The sessions will include the participation of representatives from EPA and the Borough of Fair Lawn, in addition to Sandvik, Inc. and Thermo Fisher Scientific, the two companies
which have been responsible for the investigation and remediation of the Fair Lawn Well Field site since 1983.

The potentially responsible parties will tentatively complete the engineering design in July 2023 and construction will start in the fall of 2023. The construction is expected to be completed in the spring of 2024.

In April and August 2021, EPA oversaw two rounds of sampling to determine the extent of perfluorooctanoic sulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) contamination in groundwater at the Fair Lawn Well Field Superfund site. The results of groundwater and surface water will be available to the public in the Pre-Remedial Design Investigation (PDI) report.

EPA is overseeing the engineering design of a groundwater treatment system for the Fair Lawn Well Field Superfund site. The groundwater treatment system will remove groundwater contamination from the well, including PFOA and PFOS, so that in the future, it could be safely consumed as drinking water if the borough decides to use the treated groundwater.
