New York City is the global dream for many travelers. Even those with permanent residences in the city cannot imagine staying in another place. Until they need to move apartments and the bubble bursts, that is. It’s not always as easy as it may seem to pull off a small move in NYC without any help. But, if you use a moving company on your next move and follow these expert tips, your small move will be a breeze, even in the city that never sleeps.

Don’t Skimp on Paying for Movers

Even if you’re moving down the street or around the block, your small move will still involve packing, moving, and unpacking. It is always best to use an experienced moving company to protect your stuff and to get you into your new place faster. Look for a moving company specializing in small moves, and you’ll be good to go.

Pack With Unpacking in Mind

The last thing you want to do is toss everything into boxes and hope for the best. The moving company you choose will not do the unpacking for you. So, what you ideally want to do is pack with unpacking in mind. Move systematically through each room and put the items you hardly use at the bottom of the box. Also, keep similar items together based on the room you use them in. Pack essentials in a separate box, including first aid kits, medicines, and flashlights. Clothes can stay on their hangers, especially more expensive items, and you should pack them in wardrobe boxes to protect them.

When the packing is done, label each box clearly so the moving company knows which boxes are meant for what rooms. You can also color-code your boxes to make it easier.

Lastly, even if your move is smaller than packing up a double-story house, you still need time to sift through your belongings and decide what goes and what stays. Give yourself enough time to do this to eliminate mistakes and frustration.

Use the Right Boxes

Again, you don’t want to throw things into the first box you find on the street. You will have to buy sturdy moving boxes, including bubble wrap and packing tape to help minimize the risk of damage to your stuff.

Take Your New Place’s Size Into Consideration

If your new place is smaller, chances are some of your furniture won’t fit. Instead of trying to squeeze them in, sell the large pieces and use the money to buy size-appropriate replacements.

Plan Your Moving Day

Even though your moving company will do most of the heavy lifting, you will still be driving or walking up and down to ensure everything goes according to plan. By nightfall, you will be too exhausted to cook or do anything else. Plan for this by packing water, snacks, and microwavable meals in a small box.

Small Moves Made Easy

Small moves can be just as time-consuming and tiring as large ones. But these tips will help you get through your small move and enjoy your new home in no time.
