Ridgewood NJ, Ridgewood High School was placed into “lockdown” status late Monday morning, 04/17, following receipt of a 911 telephone call reporting the presence of an armed individual wishing to do harm located in the school’s student cafeteria. Ridgewood Police officers rushed to the scene and thoroughly searched the building with the assistance of several nearby police departments; everything was found be in order. Ridgewood Fire department and EMS personnel were on standby outside of the building as a precaution. An investigation of the 911 telephone report’s origin is now underway.
It appears to be a case of “Swatting” , Swatting is a dangerous and illegal prank in which someone makes a hoax emergency call to the police, claiming that there is a serious threat or crime in progress at a specific location. The purpose of swatting is typically to cause a SWAT team or other law enforcement officers to respond to the targeted location, often with a high degree of force and weaponry.
Swatting is a highly dangerous practice because it puts innocent people at risk of serious injury or death, as well as puts law enforcement officers in a highly volatile and unpredictable situation. In addition, swatting is a criminal offense and can lead to serious legal consequences for those involved, including charges of filing false reports, conspiracy, and other crimes. Swatting is taken very seriously by law enforcement agencies and can result in significant fines, jail time, and other legal penalties.

Do kids still find this funny? After everything that has happened? Really pathetic. (Maybe shouldn’t assume it was a kid.)
How about a “funny phone call” instead? Most jocular!
“Is your refrigerator running?” “Yes.” “Well, catch it before it gets away!”
“Do you have Prince Albert in a can?” “Yes.” “Well, let him out!”
Oops, showing my age.
This is horrible and was likely extremely tramatizing for these poor students. It was addressed on the BOE call last night as “the elephant in the room” and it was state that communications to parents were timely, however many parents learned first on Facebook about the incident and that the lockdown was over.
If these snowflakes are “extremely traumatized” then we are in Big, Big trouble…
Lock down called before noon; first communication from principal was an email at 1:37; superintendent at 6:15
No emergency call similar to when there is a delayed opening.
Does anyone know what village dept. responded to this call?
