Ridgewood NJ, FBI Director Christopher Wray issued a stark warning on Thursday, revealing that Chinese government-affiliated hackers have infiltrated critical infrastructure in the United States and are poised to strike at a moment’s notice. Speaking at Vanderbilt University’s 2024 Summit on Modern Conflict and Emerging Threats, Wray detailed an ongoing Chinese hacking campaign dubbed Volt Typhoon, which has successfully breached numerous American companies operating in telecommunications, energy, water, and other vital sectors. Alarmingly, 23 pipeline operators have been among the targets.
Wray emphasized that China is actively developing the capability to unleash havoc on critical infrastructure, intending to sow panic among civilians. The cyber pre-positioning observed aligns with China’s broader strategy to dissuade the United States from defending Taiwan, a democratic island that Beijing claims as its own territory.
China’s ambitions concerning Taiwan have long been contentious, with Beijing refusing to rule out the use of force to assert control over the island. In response, Taiwan vehemently asserts its sovereignty and insists that only its people have the right to determine their future.
Despite Chinese claims to the contrary, Wray underscored the difficulty in discerning the true intent behind these cyber operations. While Chinese authorities have attempted to distance themselves by attributing Volt Typhoon to a criminal ransomware group, evidence suggests otherwise. Leading tech companies and cybersecurity experts have linked the attacks to China, exposing a sophisticated network of botnets employed to conceal malicious activities.
In a related development, Apple recently removed Meta Platforms services WhatsApp and Threads from its App Store in China, citing orders from the Chinese government over national security concerns. China’s Embassy in Washington dismissed accusations of state involvement in cyberattacks, framing them as attempts to politicize cybersecurity issues.
As tensions escalate and cybersecurity threats proliferate, it’s imperative for governments, businesses, and individuals to remain vigilant and proactive in defending against cyber threats. The revelations made by Director Wray serve as a sobering reminder of the evolving nature of modern conflicts and the critical importance of cybersecurity in safeguarding national interests and global stability.

People used to ignore ‘preppers’ and those who live ‘off grid’… but think about ‘what if’ a hacker shut off just one of the following:
cell phones, internet, credit card/atm network, electricity, city water, landline phones, cable tv.
Do you have a backup plan?
Do you have cash? (small bills) food? WATER? pet food? generator (natural gas or gasoline.. what if the natural gas infrastructure is compromised?
I watched the consumers freak out about toilet paper during covid pandemic or a few days after superstorm sandy… most people would be unable to handle any of the above…
The biggest “prepper” in the world is the United States government.
good luck if you believe that. If there ever is a huge problem get ready to wait in line for whatever the govt decides you get. Just like when the power goes out, the shithole cities get taken care of first so they don’t riot.
You misunderstand. When I say the United States Government, I don’t mean YOU, and I certainly don’t mean any of the people in the “shithole cities.” I mean exactly what I said. I mean the essential personnel involved in COG and COOP programs. Hence, the USG is the biggest prepper around, even though they ridicule you for contemplating it.
Get rid of the Biden administration and the world will be a much better place.
You’ll never not convince me that the CCP had nothing to do with the barge going into the bridge….
they are ‘poking’ at us to see our vulnerabilities
Of course it’s China. And another quick note, I agree with the first post! I certainly was one of the many freaking out about toilet paper. It was not pleasant at all
So, after decades of transferring technology to China; uprooting whole industries and sending them to China; kowtowing to China’s social mores when exporting American entertainment products and assisting their government and media with censoring content; allowing China to buy up America properties and American farmland … The U.S. spent years building up China and giving them a foothold in U.S. territory and now they want you to be concerned about China. You draw your own conclusions.
Post of the day!
Not a problem as long as “the big guy” gets 10%
They scare me. The Chinese folks (I will be PC) who are here, feel entitled like we owe them something. Before you judge my comment, think about it. It’s true
They scare you?! That’s literally Sinophobia and that’s probably a hate crime.
