FDU Poll: 68% oppose a gas tax hike

With gas prices below $2 a gallon in some parts of the state, policymakers are considering raising the gas tax. Legislators say the additional revenue would go to fund much-needed bridge and road repairs in the state. However, the public isn’t buying it. The most recent statewide survey from Fairleigh Dickinson University’s PublicMind finds respondents oppose the idea of additional taxes by a more than two-to-one margin, with many (31%) saying their opposition is driven by skepticism that the funds would be used as intended, and the belief that residents are already overburdened by taxes (45%). 1. Including tolls and the lower commuter tax breaks for rail and bus vs. drive and park, NJ already has the second highest transportation taxes in the country after NY. So where did all of that money go in a state that is the 4th smallest by physical size? Seems like a black hole of incompetence. Why throw more good money after that disgrace?

  2. I tend to agree with the above comment, but just what do people suggest to fix our lousy roads and bridges?

  3. Senate Finance Chair Sarlo works for Sanzari construction which does road, bridge and tunnel repair in NJ. Tell me that’s not a conflict of interest that he favors raising the gasoline tax?!?

  4. I don’t think the vast majority of people would have a problem with tax money, even a raising of tax money, going to infrastructure repair if it was that straightforward. However, the people know that it doesn’t work that way in reality once all the various interest groups and political deals get involved. There’s a reason why this State is the most commonly cited by late-night TV comedians and has a massive TV hit with a show about organized crime and corruption. The list of NJ politicians who have been arrested and incarcerated over the years is very long. And they were just the ones who were successfully caught.
