Twp. of Washington NJ, Emergency responders in Bergen County faced a dramatic scene on Friday afternoon as a vehicle rollover escalated into a brush fire along one of New Jersey’s busiest highways.
Quick Action Prevents Highway Disaster
At approximately 1:43 p.m. on May 1, 2026, the Township of Washington Fire Department (WTVFD) was dispatched to the Garden State Parkway Southbound, just north of the Washington Avenue exit.
Initial reports of a vehicle rollover were confirmed by the Washington Township Police and Fire Chief 45-2. Upon arrival, crews discovered a harrowing sight: a vehicle resting upside down in a wooded embankment, fully engulfed in flames.
Coordinated Response and Extinguishment
Fortunately, the driver had managed to exit the vehicle prior to the arrival of emergency services. However, the fire posed a significant risk of spreading into the dry timber of the surrounding embankment.
-
Rapid Attack: Crews from Engine 44 and Engine 43 arrived on-scene and immediately deployed lines to suppress the vehicle fire and hot spots in the woods.
-
Mutual Aid: The Hillsdale Fire Department provided critical support, arriving on-scene with additional water supplies and manpower to ensure the blaze was fully contained.
-
Overhaul Operations: Firefighters performed extensive overhaul and thermal monitoring to prevent any reignition while the wreckage was recovered from the woods by local towing services.
A Community Effort
The successful outcome of this incident highlights the seamless coordination between the Township of Washington Police, local fire crews, and our neighbors in Hillsdale. Thanks to their quick response, a potentially dangerous woodland fire was averted.
“Excellent job by all agencies on scene today. The coordination between departments ensured the safety of the driver and the protection of the surrounding environment.” — WTVFD Statement
