Ridgewood NJ, Big changes are coming to the daily commute in Ridgewood, NJ. From smoother downtown transit to high-visibility safety upgrades, the Village is prioritizing infrastructure and pedestrian protection this month.

Here is the latest on the North Broad Street restoration and the new “smart” safety signals helping to prevent accidents in our neighborhoods.

Smooth Sailing: North Broad Street Paving Complete

If you’ve been avoiding the downtown corridor due to rough patches, there’s good news. Last week, PSE&G contracting crews successfully completed the milling and paving of North Broad Street.

The project covered the critical stretch between East Ridgewood Avenue and Franklin Avenue. In a move to protect local business access and keep traffic flowing during the day, the crews worked exclusively overnight. This off-peak scheduling allowed for a rapid turnaround on roadway improvements with minimal disruption to the Village’s daytime hustle.

Innovative Safety: The New Flashing Stop Sign

Beyond the fresh asphalt, the Ridgewood Signal Division is tackling intersection safety with new technology. On Wednesday, a flashing LED stop sign was installed at the busy intersection of East Glen Avenue and Northern Parkway.

While it may seem like a small change, the data behind these signs is impressive. This specific upgrade is designed to combat “sign fatigue” and distracted driving at high-volume crossings.

Why it matters (By the Numbers):

  • 42% to 50% Reduction: Studies indicate that flashing stop signs can cut total accidents nearly in half at troubled intersections.

  • 53% Decrease in Violations: These high-visibility signals reduce “blow-through” instances—where drivers fail to stop entirely—by over 50%.

What’s Next for Ridgewood Drivers?

As the Village continues to roll out its infrastructure plan, residents can expect more targeted safety improvements at key intersections. Keep an eye on local advisories for upcoming paving schedules and pedestrian safety initiatives.
