Edgewater NJ, Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella announced the arrests of DUSTIN ROBALINO (DOB: 06/10/2004; single; unemployed) of 108 Kennedy Boulevard, Bayonne, NJ; GILBERTO ROMAN (DOB: 12/22/2003; single; unemployed) of 5 Monroe Avenue, Carteret, NJ; WILKINS FURMENT (DOB: 11/10/2003; single; caterer) of 456 Tonnelle Avenue, Jersey City, NJ; JIMMY RUIZ (DOB: 01/22/2005; single; unemployed) currently incarcerated at Hudson County Jail; and GIANCARLO RODRIGUEZ (DOB: 10/11/1997; single; self-employed disc jockey) of 354 6th Avenue, Paterson, NJ, on charges of carjacking, armed robbery, conspiracy to commit carjacking, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, aggravated assault by pointing a firearm, and theft. The arrests are the result of a joint investigation by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office under the direction of Chief Jason Love and the Edgewater Police Department under the direction of Chief Donald Martin.
On Thursday, April 13, 2023, at approximately 3:35 a.m., the Edgewater Police Department received a report of an armed carjacking that occurred in the parking lot of the Target retail store on River Road. Five male suspects, at least one of whom was armed with a handgun, approached the victim and forcibly removed him from his vehicle. The suspects assaulted the victim and stole his vehicle, chain necklace, and cell phone. The Edgewater Police Department notified the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Special Investigations Squad, and a joint investigation was initiated.
During the investigation, DUSTIN ROBALINO, GILBERTO ROMAN, WILKINS FURMENT, JIMMY RUIZ, and GIANCARLO RODRIGUEZ were identified as suspects.
On Wednesday, October 18, 2023, Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office detectives executed court authorized arrest and search warrants. As a result, DUSTIN ROBALINO, GILBERTO ROMAN, WILKINS FURMENT, and GIANCARLO RODRIGUEZ were arrested without incident. JIMMY RUIZ was served with an arrest warrant and processed at the Hudson County Jail.
DUSTIN ROBALINO, GILBERTO ROMAN, WILKINS FURMENT, JIMMY RUIZ and GIANCARLO RODRIGUEZ were each charged with first-degree carjacking, N.J.S.A. 2C:15-2a(1); first-degree armed robbery, N.J.S.A. 2C:15-1a(1); second-degree conspiracy to commit carjacking, N.J.S.A. 2C:5-2a(1)/N.J.S.A. 2C:15-2a(1); second-degree unlawful possession of a weapon, N.J.S.A. 2C:39-5b(1); second-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, N.J.S.A. 2C:39-4a(1); two counts of third-degree theft, N.J.S.A. 2C:20-3a, and fourth-degree aggravated assault by pointing a firearm, N.J.S.A. 2C:12-1b(4). ROBALINO, ROMAN, FURMENT, and RODRIGUEZ were remanded to the Bergen County Jail pending their first appearance in Central Judicial Processing Court in Hackensack, NJ. JIMMY RUIZ remained lodged in the Hudson County Jail.
Prosecutor Musella states that the charges are merely accusations and that the defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
