Flash Flood Sees Ho Ho Kus Brook Breach its Banks in Ridgewood

Ridgewood NJ, The HoHoKus Brook went over its banks in Ridgewood on Friday, 08/01 causing the Village Hall/Ridgewood Public Library parking lot to flood as well as artificial turf athletic fields at Ridgewood High School, Maple Park, and Stevens Field.

Five (5) privately owned vehicles parked in the Village Hall/Ridgewood Public Library parking lot were not moved in time and heavily damaged.  One vehicle reportedly belongs to a Library employee whose first day on the job was Friday.

The turf athletic fields were bubbled up and will need to be repaired.

Several streets, including Linwood Avenue, were closed due to flood waters.

No injuries were reported.

Damage to Village Hall itself was minimal; water entered at only one point, an overhead door on the north side of the building.

FD personnel were assisting in the clean up.

  1. Now is a great opportunity to replant mother nature’s grass where the artifcial turf has bubbled up and is in need of repair.

    The grass just needs mowing.

  2. Boyd Loving photos great as usual.
No Kayak boats there …. another missed opportunity …. Stay dry folks.

  3. Who is the Mayor calling? Dom, Senator O Tool, FMA.

  4. Where was BIG AL THE DEVELOPERS FRIEND. No pictures of him Boyed? Afraid his Toupee will get wet? Just what we need is more development right BIG AL?

Who is the Mayor calling? Dom, Senator O Tool, FMA.

    John Saraceno

  6. Get rid of the turf fields and go back to grass.

  7. Yet another great example of why the Fire House and Village Hall should NEVER have been built on a flood plain, who’s responsible for that folly James ?

  8. It’s a laughable notion that a couple turf fields are the cause of this flooding. It rained a lot. The creek done rised. Yep, silly to have built the muni buildings where they are. To prevent future flooding, the creek will need to be paved. Hello urbania.

    End of story.

  9. Watch — Saraceno, the Pooch and the other developers will spin this to say that their massive apartment projects are needed to change the course of Mother Nature — If only we had apartment projects in town, we wouldn’t have these flooding problems.

  10. #8. The flooding has increased around the turfed areas. Yesterday the hard rain had nowhere to go. Turf does not absorb the rain.

The HS field floods without the brook overflowing. Remember the high school graduation two years ago? A beautiful event marred by the inability of the turf field to absorb rainfall.

  11. Mayor standing in puddle holding phone…electrocuted, I hope?

  12. More hardscape more floods. Turf is hardscape.

  13. and it;s a waste of money.
