The charges stem from two “swatting” calls that 18-year-old Alex Barrales placed on May 13th. Barrales targeted Windsor Preparatory High School in Paramus where Barrales was previously a student . Police took a 911 call about a man being threatened with a knife. The claim turned out to be false. During the investigation, another call came in with reports of a shooting at Westfield Garden State Plaza. During the call, the dispatcher heard several loud bangs in the background that were believed to be gunshots.

Officers initiated an “active shooter response,” with alerts sent to their colleagues in surrounding towns as well as to a Bergen County Regional SWAT team and the county prosecutor’s and sheriff’s offices.  The officers at the scene  found the call to also be false.

Both calls were  determined, were made by Barrales, and he was taken to the Bergen County Jail.
