Rochelle Park NJ, A rollover crash involving a tractor trailer and a passenger vehicle resulted in the temporary closure of all northbound lanes on Route 17 at the Passaic Street exit in Rochelle Park on Friday morning, 09/07. At least one (1) person was reportedly ejected from the passenger car and transported by ambulance to Hackensack University Medical Center’s main campus.
A fuel tank from the tractor reportedly fell into the left hand travel lane of Route 17 southbound, after the tractor had mounted the highway’s concrete center divider. An SUV was damaged when it hit the fallen fuel tank. No injuries were reported in the southbound crash, but the southbound left hand travel lane was shut as a precautionary measure. Rochelle Park Fire Department and Maywood Fire Department units operated at the scene. Hackensack University Medical Center responded to the scene with multiple ALS/BLS units. Rochelle Park Police was assisted at the scene by members of the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office Patrol Division.
route 17 in that area illustrates the history of route 17 as a country road threading its way through a tight and dangerous overpass. It is far too narrow there and the closure of the sears Distibution center was an opportunity
for the state to widen that dangerous choke point on a major North South highway.Evenings the back up extends to 15 miles South and North of that narrow section overpass with residential homes on one side and businesses rail and developments underway on the other.
This is not a plan for the future of route 17.
