Garfield NJ, Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella announced the arrest of NELSON VENTURA DELACRUZ (DOB: 1/02/1990; single; warehouse worker) of Garfield, New Jersey on charges of aggravated assault and endangering the welfare of a child. The arrest was the result of an investigation conducted by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office under the direction of Chief Jason Love and the Garfield Police Department under the direction of Chief Raymond Kovach.
On Saturday, October 2, 2021, the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office was contacted by the Garfield Police Department regarding an unresponsive three-month-old child who was brought to Hackensack University Medical Center. A medical evaluation determined that the child was suffering from significant injuries consistent with shaken baby syndrome. Additionally, the injuries were consistent with a history of on-going abuse. An investigation was initiated by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit and the Garfield Police Department. During the investigation, it was learned that the child was in the care and custody of NELSON VENTURA DELACRUZ when the injuries occurred.
As a result of the investigation, on Wednesday, October 13, 2021, NELSON VENTURA DELACRUZ was arrested and charged with one count of second-degree aggravated assault, N.J.S.A. 2C:12-2b(1); and one count of second-degree endangering the welfare of a child, N.J.S.A. 2C:24-4a(2). VENTURA DELACRUZ was transported to the Bergen County Jail pending his first appearance in Central Judicial Processing Court.
Prosecutor Musella states that the charges are merely accusations and that the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
