During the intense 24-hour surge, local volunteer firefighters successfully managed five separate calls for service. The most critical incident occurred on Sheridan Avenue, where a construction crew performing drainage work accidentally struck and ruptured a main gas line, sparking immediate safety concerns.

Emergency crews rushed to the scene alongside PSE&G technicians, who successfully contained and secured the hazardous gas leak without further incident, injuries, or evacuations.

A Packed Monday: Breakdown of Emergency Responses

The gas main rupture was just one piece of an exceptionally busy day for the Ho-Ho-Kus emergency personnel. The department’s five calls included:

  • Gas Main Rupture: Contractors hit a utility line during drainage infrastructure work on Sheridan Avenue.

  • Two Motor Vehicle Collisions: Crews responded to multiple traffic accidents requiring scene safety and traffic control.

  • Brookside Avenue Fire Alarm: First responders investigated an activation at the Brookside Avenue apartment complex.

  • Carbon Monoxide (CO) Alarm: Firefighters deployed to clear a residence following a potentially life-saving CO detector activation.

Thanks to the rapid coordination between local volunteers and utility experts, all five incidents were resolved safely with zero reported injuries.
