Is Relief at the Pump Finally Coming? The Growing Push to Suspend Gas Taxes
the staf fof the Ridgewood blog
Trenton NJ, With gas prices hovering near $4.50 a gallon, the financial strain on American families is pushing many to the breaking point. While millions of drivers and truckers feel the squeeze, a heated debate is unfolding: Why aren’t more states suspending their gas taxes to provide immediate relief?

The Federal Proposal: A Temporary Break
President Donald Trump has called for a temporary suspension of the federal gasoline tax. The plan is straightforward: cut the tax now to improve affordability and phase it back in once prices stabilize.
Currently, the federal gas tax sits at 18.4 cents per gallon, while the diesel tax is 24.3 cents. For the average driver, this could mean a savings of about $3 per fill-up. While it may seem small to some, for the 100 million motorists on the road, every cent counts. However, this plan likely requires Congressional approval, putting the ball in the court of “affordability” advocates in Washington.
The State Tax Standoff: New Jersey vs. The Nation
While federal action is one piece of the puzzle, the real impact often lies at the state level. New Jersey currently maintains one of the highest gas taxes in the U.S., yet Governor Mikie Sherrill remains skeptical about a suspension. Critics argue that state-level cuts wouldn’t offer significant relief, but residents facing high costs of living in the Garden State might beg to differ.
Who has it the worst? You might have guessed it: California tops the list with a tax of over 70 cents per gallon. This staggering figure helps explain why pump prices in Los Angeles and San Francisco frequently soar above $6.00.
States Taking Action
While some governors hesitate, others are moving forward. A few states have already stepped up to protect their citizens’ wallets:
-
Indiana and Georgia: Have fully suspended their gas taxes.
-
Utah: Recently implemented a temporary tax cut.
These moves beg the question: If these states can find a way to provide relief, what are the remaining high-tax states waiting for?

we’ll show Trump , we will pay even more for gas
Unless you have severe TDS everyone should be filling it up with a smile knowing that there are more important things going on right now than how much Americans have to pay for gas.

Back when Corzine wrecked his SUV I suggested the official vehicle that carries the Governor should only buy fuel with the Governor’s cash or credit card. She has no idea how much gas costs. If she had to refuel that monster (and you know it’s a Suburban or Escalade) she would know the hurt that gas prices are putting on residents.
