Ridgewood NJ, Abigail Stine has always loved her local library. So, when she learned she could volunteer there, she didn’t hesitate. Fast forward and now, Abigail, an eighth grader at Ridgewood’s George Washington Middle School, is a recipient of the bronze President’s Service Award, which recognizes volunteers for their hours of volunteer service over a 12-month period. To achieve the bronze award, Abigail volunteered more than 50 hours with the library.
The President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation founded the President’s Volunteer Service Award in 2003 to honor individuals whose service positively impacts communities. Volunteers must be a United States citizen or lawful permanent resident of the United States, at least five years old, and complete eligible service within a 12-month period.
Nominated for the award by Assistant Principal Tim Monahan, Abigail plans to continue volunteering and may work toward the silver or gold award levels, which require more than 75 and 100 hours respectively.
“At George Washington Middle School, we have a culture of giving back to the community,” said Monahan. “It is wonderful to be able to recognize some of the students who volunteer in such a positive way.”
