Brands have replaced purpose with pandering and consumers don’t like it

the staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood NJ, what matters most in business? Quality, say Americans, who don’t care much for companies promoting political causes.

The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone and online survey finds that 87% of American Adults say the quality of a company’s products and services is important in making consumer decisions, including 70% who consider it Very Important. (To see survey question wording, click here.)

The choices consumers make are far more self-serving than changing the world and consumers view woke companies negatively for the following reasons :

1: Pandering. Companies feel the need to speak out about every social issue as they hit the headlines but this comes across as exploitation, shallow, and what is sometimes referred to as ‘virtue signaling’, which is received as being inauthentic.

2: A holier than thou attitude. Many people don’t want corporations to educate them on how to behave and live their lives. That’s a very personal thing ingrained in their value system. A preachy company selling butter can come across as patronising and condescending. Consumers just think, ‘who the hell are you?’

3: Misrepresentation. Don’t just replace your customer base in adverts to tick the boxes for diversity and inclusion (this is coming from an ethnic minority). It can feel forced and calculated when brands go out of their way to make sure every group of people is represented equally because in a non-discriminatory world you would expect to see a typical advert proportionally representing the population of a country, region or target audience.

  1. I refuse to buy products from companies that pander.
Make note of the participants in almost EVERY television commercial.
    The pandering is disgraceful

  2. Chase credit cards are the worst.
Its impossible to even understand the shouting
Same with subway. cannot understand the shouting
Now not only participants, but the voice overs like ATT

    1. The ad agencies think they will grab people’s attention, no respect for anyone’s intellect, as they think the masses are just plain stupid. ( it’s programmed for the commercials to come on louder than the show your watching). It’s a huge turn off. My “mute” button on the remote is wornout.

  3. I’m already tired of seeing all the homos on tv!
