East Rutherford NJ, The countdown to the world’s biggest sporting event is officially on! With millions of soccer fans about to descend upon the region, NJ TRANSIT has announced a major win for commuters and international visitors alike.

Under the direction of New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill, the agency has slashed round-trip transit ticket prices for the eight upcoming FIFA World Cup matches at NY/NJ Stadium (MetLife Stadium) to just $98.

Even better? This 35% price drop is completely funded by private corporate sponsors—meaning New Jersey taxpayers won’t pay a single dime for it. Here is everything you need to know about securing your ride, boarding schedules, and stadium transit rules.

How Corporate Sponsors Cut World Cup Transit Costs

Large-scale international events usually bring heavy financial burdens for local transit systems and residents. However, state officials took a firm stance against using local tax dollars, especially since FIFA itself is projected to clear billions in revenue from the tournament.

To bridge the gap, major advertisers stepped up to cover 35% of the operational transit expenses. Key corporate partners offsetting the costs include:

  • DoorDash & Audible

  • FanDuel & DraftKings

  • PSE&G, South Jersey Industries, and New Jersey American Water

“I have been clear: hosting the World Cup cannot come at the expense of New Jersey taxpayers,” said Governor Sherrill. “Since FIFA still will not cover the cost of transporting its fans despite making $13 billion from the World Cup, we are finding a solution that protects our residents.”

📱 Crucial Ticket Info: Caps, Mobile App, and Restrictions

If you are planning to take the train to see the world’s elite soccer stars, pay close attention to the strict new buying and boarding rules:

  • App-Only Purchases: Tickets go on sale starting today, but they cannot be bought at station ticket windows or vending machines. They are available exclusively via the newly updated NJ TRANSIT mobile app.

  • Strict Capacity Limits: To prevent overcrowding, tickets are strictly capped at 40,000 riders per matchday. Once they sell out, you will have to find alternative transport.

  • Timed Boarding Sluts: When purchasing, you must select a specific travel time window. Tickets will be actively checked and scanned before you are permitted onto the platform.

Matchday Transit Routes: New York vs. New Jersey Riders

NJ TRANSIT has designed strict designated travel corridors depending on where you are staying to optimize the massive influx of passengers:

For Fans Traveling From New York City (All 5 Boroughs)

  • Departure Point: You must utilize Penn Station New York for direct rail travel out to the stadium on matchdays.

For Fans Traveling From New Jersey

  • Departure Point: Local NJ riders can purchase mobile tickets from their nearest rail stations for specific time blocks.

  • The Transfer Hub: If your line requires a transfer, you will be guided through Secaucus Junction to board the dedicated connecting shuttle service straight to NY/NJ Stadium.
