Ridgewood NJ, Legendary technologist and philanthropist Gordon Moore passed away Friday at his Hawaii home at the age of 94 from natural causes, according to a family representative.  Gordon Moore was an American engineer and entrepreneur who co-founded Intel Corporation, one of the world’s largest semiconductor companies. He is best known for his observation, known as “Moore’s Law,” that the number of transistors on a microchip doubles approximately every two years, leading to exponential growth in computing power.

Moore was born on January 3, 1929, in San Francisco, California. He received a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1950, and a PhD in chemistry and physics from the California Institute of Technology in 1954.

In 1957, Moore co-founded Fairchild Semiconductor, which became a leading manufacturer of silicon transistors and integrated circuits. In 1968, he co-founded Intel Corporation with Robert Noyce, another former Fairchild employee. Intel quickly became a dominant player in the semiconductor industry, producing microprocessors and other components that powered the personal computer revolution.

Moore served as Intel’s CEO from 1975 to 1987 and as chairman of the board from 1987 to 1997. During his tenure, Intel became one of the most successful and profitable companies in the world.

Moore’s Law, which he first described in a 1965 paper, has remained a guiding principle for the semiconductor industry for over half a century. It has been used to predict the pace of technological progress and the development of increasingly powerful and affordable computing devices.

  1. End of an Era.
Too bad Intel tanked in the last years of his life.
