Trenton NJ, Governor Phil Murphy is seeking to replace six existing members of the State Board of Education, potentially as early as Monday, despite the absence of scheduled meetings for the Senate Judiciary Committee, responsible for approving these nominations.

All current members of the State Board of Education are serving on expired terms, and Governor Murphy has encountered obstacles in his attempts to replace them due to the judicial process. Last week, the Committee was slated to review the nomination of education consultant Mary Bennett, but her name was removed from the agenda amid questions about her qualifications.

The reason behind the lack of public announcement regarding Governor Murphy’s new nominees remains unclear. NJEA President Sean Spiller may have offered insights by stating in an op-ed, “Six nominees are currently awaiting confirmation by the Judiciary Committee. I urge that they all be confirmed so we can give the new commissioner a Board of Education that will be a partner in progress, not an impediment.”

Last year, NJEA executives played a role in the Governor’s nomination process for the State Board of Education. The original nominees in September 2022—Mary Bennett, Kwanghee Jung (a Rutgers University professor), and Claudine Keenan (a Stockton University dean)—failed to move forward. The three new nominees awaiting confirmation are Jeanette Pena, a former Union City Board of Education President employed by Jersey City Public Schools; Serena Rice, Executive Director of the Anti-Poverty Network; and James Williams, the Director of Racial Justice Policy at Fair Share Housing Center.

  1. It was better Christie or Murphy

  2. Of course the liberal media will not cover this story. Murphy’s a snake. NJ will be better off when he’s gone, (out of office) Thank you for your reporting.

    1. We’re not done with him…..Tammy will take Menendez’s seat. And then Phil Bicuspid becomes the Senator’s husband.

  3. I know we shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, but every time I look at that punim it feels like 451 degrees in here.

  4. Murphy please!
