WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP, NJ — A quiet Wednesday evening commute turned chaotic on June 17, 2026, following a violent hit-and-run collision on the Garden State Parkway (GSP) northbound. The incident, which left a luxury SUV heavily damaged and triggered miles of traffic backups, is currently under active investigation by law enforcement.
According to the New Jersey State Police, a white Audi SUV was traveling northbound just south of Washington Avenue when it was struck on its right rear end by an unidentified vehicle. The impact of the collision sent the Audi spinning out of control, slamming it directly into the highway’s left-side guardrail.
Instead of stopping to render aid or exchange information, the striking vehicle fled the scene immediately.

Emergency Response & Traffic Gridlock
First responders rushed to the scene shortly after the early evening crash. Multiple occupants inside the white Audi SUV sustained injuries, though authorities noted that no serious or life-threatening injuries were immediately apparent. An ambulance from The Valley Hospital was on-site to evaluate and treat those involved.
New Jersey State Police were heavily assisted at the scene by officers from the Township of Washington Police Department to manage the fallout. The heavily damaged Audi had to be removed from the fast lane by a flatbed tow truck.
The aftermath of the hit-and-run caused severe commuter delays, with northbound GSP traffic backed up for approximately 2 miles as crews worked to clear the wreckage and secure the guardrail.
Police Appeal for Witnesses
The New Jersey State Police are leading the investigation into the fleeing driver. Anyone who may have witnessed the collision, has dashcam footage of the Garden State Parkway northbound near Washington Avenue around early Wednesday evening on June 17, or noticed a vehicle with sudden, fresh rear/side damage is strongly urged to contact local authorities.
