Hackensack Explosion Causes Hazardous Materials Release

Hackensack NJ, Friday morning at approximately 10:45am City of Hackensack Fire Department First Platoon’s Ladder 1 and Deputy 1 responded to 375 Huyler Street South Hackensack on reported explosion and hazardous materials release.

Upon arrival Deputy 1 was advised that a machine malfunctioned and exploded causing approximately 12oz of Nitric Acid to spill. The building was evacuated and Bergen County Hazardous Materials team was requested. HAZMAT team members made entry backed up by firefighters and determined the spill was confined to the room of origin causing no further hazard. No injuries were reported, a private hazardous materials cleanup company arrived on scene to remove hazard.

Wood-Ridge Fire Department also responsed at 11:00 .Chief Cribben, Chief Berta, & Truck 904 responded and were assigned the FAST while companies and Bergen County HAZMAT mitigated the situation. No injuries were reported. All companies were back in town at 13:10.
