Hackensack NJ, a teacher from the Hackensack School District has filed a lawsuit in Superior Court, claiming she was wrongfully dismissed in May 2023 due to her pregnancy.
Angelica Paton, 26, who worked as a special education teacher at Hackensack High School, alleges that her termination was a result of pregnancy discrimination. According to reports from NJ.com and The Record, Paton holds a master’s degree and initially began teaching with a focus on English. However, she says she was later reassigned to special education classes, despite lacking the necessary certification for that role.
Despite receiving positive performance reviews, Paton was let go on May 1, 2023, the lawsuit claims. The school district has not responded to media inquiries regarding the lawsuit or the reasons behind Paton’s dismissal.
The case highlights ongoing concerns about workplace discrimination, particularly regarding pregnant employees, and it underscores the challenges teachers face in maintaining job security under such circumstances. The outcome of the lawsuit could have significant implications for employment practices within the school district.
