Hawthorne NJ, during a powerful storm Tuesday evening that swept through the area, the Hawthorne Fire Department was kept on high alert, responding to numerous emergency calls. The storm, which brought heavy rain and flooding, put the department’s skills and teamwork to the test as they navigated a series of challenging situations.

The first call came from St. Anthony’s Church, where an activated fire alarm prompted a swift response. After thoroughly searching the building and finding no signs of fire, the team reset the alarm and quickly moved on to their next emergency: reports of vehicles trapped in floodwaters around the borough. With flooding becoming a significant concern, the department was placed on standby, ready to respond to any additional calls that might come in.

While on standby, the department was dispatched to a residence on Washington Avenue, where a smoke condition had been reported. Upon arrival, Chief Speranza found the home filled with heavy smoke and quickly confirmed that there was a working basement fire. Firefighters immediately sprang into action, stretching hoses to both the basement and the attic as a precautionary measure.

The fire was located in the ceiling of the basement, and it required extensive efforts to access and extinguish due to the challenging location. Recognizing the need for additional manpower, the Glen Rock Fire Department was called in to assist. After 90 minutes of intense work, the fire was finally brought under control.

Throughout the operation, the firefighters faced tough weather conditions, but they persevered, ensuring the safety of the residents and preventing the fire from spreading further. The Hawthorne Police Department, Hawthorne Ambulance Corps, Glen Rock Fire Department, and Prospect Park Fire Department all played crucial roles in managing the situation and supporting the Hawthorne Fire Department’s efforts.
