Mahwah NJ, A multi-agency law enforcement investigation in Bergen County has resulted in the arrest of a Hawthorne, New Jersey man on multiple severe felony charges, including the sexual assault of a minor and violating sex offender registration laws.

Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella announced the arrest of 45-year-old Jason M. Herskovitz. The apprehension followed a coordinated probe spearheaded by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit and the Mahwah Police Department.

Here are the details regarding the investigation, the precise criminal counts filed, and the law enforcement agencies involved.

The Investigation: Multiple Incidents Flagged in Mahwah

The case began unfolding on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, when the Mahwah Police Department, under the leadership of Chief Timothy O’Hara, contacted the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit. Local authorities reported an alleged sexual assault of a juvenile occurring within the township of Mahwah, NJ.

A subsequent joint investigation conducted by county detectives and Mahwah police revealed that Herskovitz had allegedly sexually assaulted the minor on more than one occasion.

The Arrest and Complex Criminal Charges

On Thursday, June 25, 2026, law enforcement located and arrested Herskovitz in Wyckoff, New Jersey.

Following the investigation, the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office processed the following statutory felony charges against him:

  • Two counts of second-degree Sexual Assault (violating N.J.S.A. 2C:14-2c(4))

  • One count of third-degree Endangering the Welfare of a Child (violating N.J.S.A. 2C:24-4a(1))

Additional Sex Offender Registration Violations

Because of the defendant’s legal status, the Hawthorne Police Department filed an additional felony charge against him:

  • One count of third-degree Failure to Provide Notice and Re-register as a Sex Offender (violating New Jersey’s Megan’s Law under N.J.S.A. 2C:7-2d(1))

Following his processing, Herskovitz was remanded to the Bergen County Jail in Hackensack, New Jersey, where he remains held pending his first appearance in Bergen County Superior Court.

Law Enforcement Statements and Agency Acknowledgments

Prosecutor Mark Musella reminded the public that all criminal charges are merely accusations at this stage of the legal process. Under the United States and New Jersey constitutions, the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

Prosecutor Musella extended formal thanks to the Mahwah Police Department for their foundational role in the investigation. He also credited the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office, the Hawthorne Police Department, and the Wyckoff Police Department for their critical field assistance and inter-agency coordination.
