Over the past ten years, in conjunction with running his successful business, he’s been actively pursuing his passion for oil painting, mostly Portraits and Still Life. Joel has pursued his passion for painting at the Art Students League in New York, where he has been the recipient of several “Red Dot” awards for excellence in Portraiture. He is also an active member of the Ridgewood Art Institute, New Jersey, where he received in a juried exhibition, The Hudson Valley Art Association Award for his still life painting. Joel’s Portrait and Still Life paintings have been selected multiple times as part of the FAV 15% (jury’s favorite 15% of the entries) in the Bold Brush Painting competitions. Additionally, Joel was honored to receive the Award of Excellence, Bronze Awards, Silver, and Finalist Award for his Portrait, Still Life and Landscape paintings from Camelback Gallery’s Juried Painting and Photography Competitions 2020 – 2021
In class students will learn to do “realistic” oil painting! Emphasis will be placed on composition, observing and understanding the light source, it’s color, color temperature, drawing, paint mixing & application, brushwork, and achieving correct tonal values with light and shadow to show form. We will apply these concepts and characteristics to capture the true essence of an individual in our Portraits and achieve accurate representation in our Still Life setups. Throughout the painting process, the student’s personal style and direction is always encouraged with individual critiques.
