Upper Saddle River NJ, from time to time the Ridgewood blog does book reviews and we just finished the “King of Con ” by Thomas Giacomaro  and Natasha Stoynoff published in 2018 . We received a copy from the author Tom Giacomaro , the “King of Con: himself through a mutual friend  in early February and finally got to reading it this past weekend .

The book is an auto biography of  Bergen County con man Thomas Giacomaro (the King of Con) . Giacomaro  spent 12 years in jail for bilking investors out of $73 million (some say $80 million )  and the tell-all book  is billed as , “How a Smooth-Talking Jersey Boy Made and Lost Billions, Baffled the FBI, Eluded the Mob, and Lived to Tell the Crooked Tale.”

Well its all true , he did and the book is a fun, fast ,non stop adventure of a brilliant con-man weaving his way through  a local whos who of mob associates  , politicians , industries ,law enforcement  and Bergen history .

The New Jersey swindler who became a government informant and fleeced over 200 investors out of $73 million while he was under the “watchful eye” of the FBI. Including  the bestselling whodunit author Mary Higgins Clark  aka ,“The Queen of Suspense” . Higgins may have been bilked of as much as $20 million after she and her sons invested in Wellesley Services, a brokerage house linked to Giacomaro .

The  author takes a cynical view of both the con and the conned reducing human nature down to nothing more than fear vs greed.  Time lining, his life from a young boy  growing up in North Jersey ,with an abusive father and alcoholic mother ,Giacomaro  chronicles the choices he makes or dose not make , the lure of the “life” , family , crime, drugs , alcohol and the adrenaline rush of the score. All the time living a  lavish lifestyle with luxury residences in Saddle River, and Delray Beach.

For anyone interested in colorful piece of New Jersey’s  and Bergen’s down and dirty past , or what I like to call the “other side” of history this is a must read book !

  1. Thanks for the review!
As per book cover, the co-author is “Natasha” not “Nancy”… 🙂
