Burnt HVAC Unit Triggers Heavy Smoke and Emergency Response at Ramsey ShopRite

RAMSEY, N.J. — Emergency personnel from multiple departments responded Friday morning following reports of heavy smoke filling the interior of the ShopRite supermarket located in the Interstate Shopping Center on Route 17.

Rapid Multi-Agency Response to Interstate Shopping Center

At approximately 8:40 AM, dispatchers alerted the Ramsey Fire Department and Ramsey Rescue to a reported smoke condition inside the grocery store.

Upon arrival, officers from the Ramsey Police Department confirmed active, heavy smoke inside the building, prompting an immediate escalation for mutual aid assistance. An Engine and Tower Ladder from neighboring Mahwah Fire Department were called to the scene to assist in investigating the source of the smoke.

Rooftop HVAC Transformer Identified as Source

Crews from Ramsey Rescue 423 and Assistant Chief 491 teamed up with firefighters to locate the source of the smoke.

Rooftop inspection crews isolated the issue to a burnt electrical transformer inside a rooftop HVAC unit.

Once the malfunction was contained, emergency teams vented the lingering smoke from the supermarket interior, allowing the business to clear safety checks and resume normal operations. All responding fire and rescue units subsequently cleared the scene
