Ho-Ho-Kus NJ, the Ho-Ho-Kus Police Department recently took part in the Pedestrian Crosswalk Detail, an important safety initiative sponsored by AAA. During this event, officers focused on enforcing pedestrian safety laws and raising public awareness about the importance of yielding to pedestrians in marked crosswalks.
Throughout the detail, officers stopped 53 motor vehicles to educate drivers on proper crosswalk etiquette and the critical need to prioritize pedestrian safety. This proactive effort is part of a broader campaign to reduce pedestrian accidents and fatalities.
The statistics are sobering. Last year alone, 177 pedestrians were struck and killed in New Jersey. As of February 1, 2024, 22 pedestrians have already lost their lives. These numbers highlight the urgent need for continued education and enforcement to protect pedestrians.

Please tell me they didn’t stop 53 cars at random to lecture the drivers about this bs pedestrian safety. They’d be better off stopping pedestrians and telling them simple things like how they should be paying attention and not walking into the street like they own it. Because if push comes to shove whatever right of way you think you have isn’t going to protect you if you’re crossing the street with your head up your a$*.
Yeah, that’s not how it works Evel Knievel. The HHK PD has is right on this one. A motorist’s ego and ad hoc judgment of perceived pedestrian bad behavior does not translate to your absolute right to commit manslaughter. Take your road rage out on your neighbor’s bushes or something maybe.
Yeah…
F these cars.
I walk where I want, when I want.
If that car hits me, they will pay the price.
They will be sued for millions, put in jail and shunned from society.
I’ll still be dead….
…but that will show those drivers who’s in charge.
The best thing they could do is to stop and ticket entitled pedestrians who think they have the right to disregard DON’T WALK signs at cross walks and who still think the pedestrian ALWAYS has the right of way. And don’t forget the ones who jump in front of moving vehicles.
So very true, I teach my kids to stop at the curb. Look both ways before crossing the street. You donβt have the right away the cars do you gotta be the biggest jackass to walk into a street without looking, because youβre gonna lose. Just because someone walks off, the sidewalk into the road cars have to jam on their break. Ridiculous. No just like when you were a kid they taught you look both ways before crossing the road pick your head up and get your eyes off your phone and wake up.
To the folks above with “the cars gonna win” argument, I ask you what should the elderly man who was hit and killed in the crosswalk across from Village hall have done differently? I’m certain he didn’t “jump” or “run” into the crosswalk did he? Was he just the cost of doing business to allow drivers to ignore pedestrians in crosswalks? God forbid drivers slow down and look out for pedestrians.
Also, you know those dimpled fiberglass plates at corners all over town are designed to allow sight impaired and blind people to know where the corner and crosswalk is…. What should the blind people do in your world, stay home and not walk? Ya’ll need to get out of your bubbles and consider that the streets and sidewalks are for everybody, not just able bodied people.
City problems. You want bike lanes and pedestrian plazas and all that crap move back to Greenpoint. I don’t payy all this money to live here and maintain vehicles here so I can start and stop and slow down and yield to you or anybody else if I don’t have to. I don’t yield to anyone in town or the cbd and Ive never been ticketed and I never will be. Thats life.
The car still won.
It is incumbent upon you and only you to keep your body safe .
Slowing by walks yes that will help. Maybe the speed limit should go down in the c b d section of town. But we should never teach our kids to just walk in to the road at any time before looking. Come on.would you walk over train tracks with out looking. Not me , you can not always trust the gates.
If you’re not going to respect live people crossing the street, you’re probably not going to be concerned with things like speed limits either.
very true.
that exactly why YOU need to keep your body safe…
,,,some A-hole might hit you and kill you.
Some of the comments here point to the erosion of social fabric. Apparently gone are the days when motorists used to take appropriate, common-sense, responsibility for their large mass of metal moving at speed, and gone are the days when pedestrians used to apply awareness and common sense to the dangers of crossing roads.
Good job by Ho-Ho-Kus Police on their intervention! Such a measure is, surely, urgently required in Ridgewood given the entitled attitudes here in being ignorant of humanity, law and common sense.
Another reason why YOU must protect YOURSELF, and not rely on others to follow the laws.
Open your eyes and look before you cross the street,
My heavens isnβt this just common sense. Look both ways before crossing, use the crosswalks and if driving keep aware , drive slower thru populated areas. Take responsibility for yourself
I’m “rich and stupid” – responsibility is for little people.
Just look both ways, before entering the road.end of the story.

Just lookβββ-then walk
