Hoboken NJ, the Hoboken PATH station in New Jersey will close for nearly a month starting January 30, as part of a major rehabilitation effort by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. The station is expected to reopen on February 24, with the closure timed to accommodate necessary repairs and modernization of the 116-year-old rail system.

Why Is the Station Closing?

The temporary closure is part of the Port Authority’s two-year, $430 million initiative to upgrade the PATH system. The work at the Hoboken station includes:

  • Track and switch replacements
  • Staircase repairs
  • Walking surface improvements

By completing these projects simultaneously, the agency aims to minimize the duration of disruptions. Officials estimate that a piecemeal approach could have extended the repairs over a year with frequent weekend service reductions.

Impact on Commuters

The closure comes shortly after a fare increase from $2.75 to $3 for single PATH rides. It also coincides with increased demand for public transit, as commuters look to avoid Manhattan’s $9 congestion fee for vehicles.

“We are committed to full transparency throughout this process and providing an array of travel alternatives during the closure,” said Rick Cotton, the Port Authority’s executive director.

Alternative Transportation Options

The Port Authority has outlined several options for commuters during the closure:

  • Ferry Service: Additional ferries will operate during peak hours.
  • Free Shuttle Buses: Shuttle buses will connect Hoboken riders to the Newport and Exchange Place PATH stations in Jersey City.
  • NJ Transit: Route 126 buses between Hoboken and the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Midtown Manhattan will run more frequently.
  • Supplemental PATH Trains: Extra trains will operate on weekdays between Jersey City and Manhattan, including the World Trade Center and 33rd Street stations.
  • Hudson-Bergen Light Rail: Additional service will be available on this NJ Transit route.

Plan Ahead

While the Port Authority scheduled the closure during what it considers a less busy period for PATH riders, commuters should expect delays and plan their travel accordingly.
