Paramus Launches Fall Infrastructure & Greenery Initiative: 400 New Trees and Major Sidewalk Repairs Coming Soon

Paramus NJ, Paramus is set to restore its natural canopy and overhaul local infrastructure starting this September. Following summer storms that damaged municipal greenery, the borough is moving forward with a dual-focused plan to plant 400 new trees and repair over 600 damaged sidewalk slabs across town.

Borough Mayor Chris DiPiazza outlined the comprehensive strategy, which balances environmental restoration with safety upgrades for pedestrian pathways.

Rebuilding the Tree Canopy After Summer Storms

The borough council approved a fall tree bid contract with Barbato Nursery Corp. for $23,225 during its August 19 meeting.

While the new plantings were part of the borough’s long-term maintenance strategy, they come at a crucial time following a July 3 storm that knocked down at least 125 trees in the area.

“We would be doing it anyway,” Mayor DiPiazza noted. “It’s part of our strategy and our plan for tree maintenance, tree removal, and tree planting to hire some outside help. This allows the work to be done a little quicker and more efficiently.”

As part of the initiative, Barbato Nursery Corp. will also:

• Remove 60 dead trees damaged during the July storm.

• Remove 350 non-storm-related tree stumps throughout the town.

• Plant 400 new trees distributed evenly across Paramus neighborhoods.

$380,000 Sidewalk Replacement Program Moves Forward

In tandem with tree planting, Paramus is tackling sidewalk hazard areas damaged by overgrown root systems.

Earlier this year, the borough awarded a $380,000 contract to Lyndhurst-based La Forza Construction LLC to replace more than 600 sidewalk slabs that have cracked or lifted due to municipal trees.

To protect the local ecosystem, the borough will not cut down trees during sidewalk work. Instead, contractors will replace the damaged concrete slabs and carefully trim nearby roots.
