U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez Monday said Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad is a “pathological liar” and that nothing he offered in American media interviews was convincing enough to stave off a U.S. military strike.
Assad’s Syrian regime is accused of attacking civilians with chemical weapons last month and President Obama is attempting to lobby support for U.S. military action in response.
Menendez led the Senate’s first hearing on the issue last week and is among those who fully support Obama’s call for action.
Speaking to reporters after a luncheon honoring the late Sen. Frank Lautenberg Monday afternoon in New Brunswick, Menendez called Assad “a war criminal.”
“I think Assad is a pathological liar,” Menendez said. “I think he will say anything in order to avoid the attack.”
He also said he didn’t expect the Syrian leader to admit in interviews that he used chemical weapons against those in Syria who oppose his regime.
“I don’t know war criminals who come forward and say, ‘Yes, I committed the act,'” Menendez said.
