Ridgewood NJ, on a busy afternoon when a WAGON or another BIG VEHICLE is parked on first spot outside Cafe 37 on S.Broad Street in Ridgewood and when all other parking spots are filled behind, this creates a big problem on a busy day. Cars making left turn from Hudson street will have their vision totally blocked by a BIG vehicle and cannot see fast moving cars approaching from their left & have to hope these cars will not move fast.(see photos). The frightened driver is so preoccupied making the left turn into a blind spot that the motorist completely forgets about pedestrians & traffic coming from the right. The driver always looks like a fool as he or she has to take abuse from motorists in both directions. After failing to find a solution, the town blamed two stores in the intersection. “The Bamboo House” which has a big “Take Out Orders” sign in front window & Super Cellars store next door are now barred from pick-ups & drop offs outside their premises with two big cones attached by tape and a bright yellow paint job which looks so cheap and more like a crime scene from a third world country permanently installed by the village. Mayor Paul Vagianos who is in the restaurant business should get involved as this would not be allowed to happen next to his restaurant. The bamboo House depends a lot on fast pick ups from outside. Some Mount Carmel parishioners just a few yards away prefer to drive the wrong way into Mt Carmel parking lot for 5;30 mass on a Saturday rather than take a chance on that left turn if a big vehicle is parked in that first spot. The solution to this problem where fender benders have occurred is to remove that first ‘PARKING SPOT” outside Cafe 37. this will give “HUGE VISIBILITY TO MOTORISTS” making that left turn. The town can then remove all the ugly warning signs from the street outside these two premises in S.Broad street and go back to its elegant self.

That was too easy a fix….The Village brainiacs will never do that!
Understand, in the G, it is not the act of doing something, but the act of APPEARING TO DO SOMETHING that counts.
That one parking space has been a problem for the 40+ years i have been living here, just like parking, but actually doing something about it apparently is not within the imagination of those who have been granted power.
Perhaps those who might be turned off by the hassle of getting Chinese and some beer might want to think of Greek instead?
Was it Marx or Lenin who said, “When everything becomes a conflict of interest, then conflict of interest will disappear?” Just joking………………………
I agree that trying to make a left turn off Hudson, you practically have to be completely out on Broad to see if a car is coming…very dangerous
Not the biggest issue in the Village but agree with the solution proposed. No real hardship taking a single parking spot away, especially since the mother of all parking garages is a few feet away and mostly empty.
Well, that’s engineering for you.
Great idea and a no brainer.
Yeah, but then you might have squirrels congregating there……………
Another idiotic idea to take away street parking to solve the problem of poor and inattentive drivers.
Never take personal responsibility, when you can have the government punish everyone else to accommodate your shortcomings.
Truth.
Yes, it’s a dangerous intersection. That danger is mitigated by being patient and waiting a few moments to turn.
But trust the commenters here, who loudly and repeatedly claim to be in favor of “small government”, to scream and yell for the government to do something.
Yes, let’s eliminate that parking space and open up the blind spot. It’s not possible to legislate what types of vehicle may park there. Even a medium-size one can be a problem anyway.
Could make it No Left Turn heading west from Hudson, but that would force all cars at that corner to turn right, creating a disaster at the corner of E. Rwd Ave. and Broad, which is tough as it is, with a potential backup from that corner back to Hudson.
Council, we know you read this blog. Are you listening? Please consider this helpful suggestion to prevent more accidents there.
If the town really wants to start making some money. Start renting out floors maybe a car dealer, for one floor. Maybe use another floor for we can flea markets anything that would generate money if they really care. If not, someone will have to pay for this in layoffs.
Just because you remove a lined parking spot doesn’t mean car will not park there.
Or… just learn to drive.
THIS!!
..sadly, we don’t live in this world (self-sufficient, personally responsible America) anymore.
My family and I walk through the parking lot today after we park the car to try to help town out a little revenue. It smelled like piss.
Flip the one way, make Hudson one-way heading East and Passaic one-way heading west.
Pretty sure it has been blessed by the the residents living on that block
To those saying be patient and learn to drive – that is not the issue – the issue is, you can’t SEE whats coming!!! And let face it, not all people do the speed limit so speeding down Broad makes it worse
NO.
The issue is personal responsibility and not looking to Big Brother to solve all of your problems like little children.
The issue is also not holding those who break the law responsible and punishing everyone by imposing additional restrictions.
