Ridgewood NJ, Artificial intelligence (AI) is rattling New Jersey’s workforce, but it’s not the apocalypse—yet. August 2025’s dismal job growth of 22,000, far below the expected 75,000, and a 4.3% unemployment rate signal economic uncertainty, not just AI’s rise. Still, experts like Indeed’s Cory Stahle warn AI’s impact is “small but not zero,” hitting young tech workers hardest. From “job hugging” to “quiet cracking,” NJ workers are feeling the heat. Here’s the truth about AI’s role in 2025’s uncertain job market and how to stay ahead!

AI’s Shadow: Small but Growing Threat to NJ Jobs

The U.S. economy added a measly 22,000 jobs in August 2025, with unemployment climbing to 4.3%, per the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Economists expected 75,000 new jobs, but economic uncertainty, not AI, is the main culprit, says Cory Stahle, senior economist at Indeed. “AI’s impact on the labor market has been fairly small,” he notes, “but that doesn’t mean it’s zero.” Career coach Mandi Woodruff-Santos agrees, pointing to broader economic jitters: “No business knows what the Trump administration will do next.”

In NJ, where Bergen County’s tech sector is a growing hub, AI-driven layoffs, like Salesforce’s 4,000 cut support roles, are mostly confined to tech. A Stanford study found a 13% employment drop for young workers (ages 22-25) in AI-exposed roles, while mid-career workers and less AI-reliant fields remain stable or grow. For AI to shake NJ’s broader workforce, it must hit retail and marketing, Stahle warns.

NJ’s Job Market Woes: Job Hugging and Quiet Cracking

NJ workers are in survival mode. A Korn Ferry report highlights “job hugging,” where employees cling to jobs out of fear, while TalentLMS describes “quiet cracking”—workplace disengagement from unhappiness. Economic uncertainty has frozen hiring, with companies in Bergen County and beyond playing it safe. “They’re being very conservative,” Woodruff-Santos says, citing unpredictable Trump policies.

The tech sector, only 5.8% of the U.S. workforce per CompTIA’s March 2025 analysis, isn’t big enough to tank the market alone. But in NJ, home to tech-driven areas like Hackensack, the ripple effects are real. Young workers in AI-heavy roles face the brunt, while others hold tight or disengage.

AI’s Double-Edged Sword: Layoffs vs. Skill Demand

While AI sparks layoffs, it’s also driving demand for new skills. A Brookings Institution report suggests employers are more likely to retrain than fire workers, with AI augmenting rather than replacing jobs. “We’re seeing more demand for AI skills,” Stahle says. NJ workers in fields like marketing or retail could benefit from learning AI tools, like those used in Ridgewood’s tech education initiatives.

Woodruff-Santos urges workers to “research your field” and explore AI training programs or free tool trials. With NJ’s proximity to NYC’s tech hub, upskilling could be a game-changer, especially for young professionals facing AI’s early disruptions.
