Ridgewood NJ, In a major revelation impacting U.S. artificial intelligence policy and 2026 midterm politics, social media platform X (formerly Twitter) announced that its Safety team uncovered a massive foreign influence operation.
According to an investigation into suspected inauthentic accounts, X identified a bot farm of approximately 200,000 accounts originating from China. Within this network, at least 200 active accounts were systematically spreading anti-data center content to sway public perception around American AI infrastructure and local power grid integrity.
AI Cartoons and Grid Fears: Inside the Disinformation Tactics
The detected bot accounts manufactured narratives designed to inflame local communities and manipulate legitimate national debates surrounding U.S. energy policy and technology investments:

Utility Rate Fears: Posts claimed that hyperscale AI data centers directly drive up household electricity prices and destabilize regional power grids.

AI-Generated Memes: Accounts shared AI-created cartoons depicting data center executives profiting at the public’s expense.

Amplifying Local Outlets: Bot networks amplified local news coverage, such as reports from the Southern Maryland Chronicle, to give manufactured outrage an authentic appearance. Publisher David Higgins II clarified that the outlet had no connection to or knowledge of the bot activity.
“We take seriously any attempts to undermine the integrity of the global town square and suspend accounts that violate our Authenticity policy,” X Safety declared in its statement.
