Ridgewood NJ, Instagram has started rolling out new restrictive account settings for users under 18, in response to growing worries about social media’s impact on young people. This significant overhaul, estimated to affect more than 100 million accounts globally, comes as parent company Meta faces a lawsuit from 33 U.S. states alleging its platforms harm children’s mental health.
For minors in the U.S., U.K., Canada, and Australia, new accounts will automatically be set to private. Existing accounts will also transition to private settings over the next 60 days. These changes will limit who can contact teens and what content they are exposed to. Additional features, such as silencing notifications between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m. and encouraging users to take breaks after 60 minutes of activity, will be introduced soon. Teens aged 16 and above will still have the option to manually adjust these settings.
Meta plans to implement these changes across the European Union later this year, with other countries to follow in 2025. As part of this overhaul, Meta is also testing age verification tools, including AI, to prevent minors from lying about their age.
This move marks a significant shift in Instagram’s approach to safeguarding young users, as the company faces increasing pressure from regulators, parents, and mental health advocates. The new changes aim to create a safer, more mindful social media experience for teens worldwide.
