Mahwah NJ, Are you a Mahwah High School senior with a strong opinion on presidential authority? The Mahwah Republican Club has officially opened submissions for its 2026 Essay Scholarship, inviting local students to dive deep into the U.S. Constitution for a chance to win funding for college or trade school.

Whether you are heading to a four-year university or a specialized trade program, this scholarship is designed to reward critical thinking and civic engagement in the Mahwah community.

2026 Essay Theme: Presidential Authority & Article II

This year’s topic focuses on a hypothetical yet high-stakes scenario involving executive power. Students are asked to analyze the following prompt:

“During the first year of President Donald Trump’s second term he deployed the National Guard to major cities to quell crime, targeted Venezuelan boats purportedly smuggling drugs, captured Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and, in a joint effort with Israel’s prime minister, killed Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.”

The Challenge: Using Article II of the U.S. Constitution as your primary resource, write a 1,000-word essay providing your opinion on whether these actions are constitutionally legal and within the purview of presidential authority.
