Joel Popadics teaches Watercolor Techniques, Landscape, Portrait, Seascape and Still Life for adults, Wednesday evenings 7:00 pm – 10:00 pm, and Thursday daytime 9:30 am – 12:30 pm.
He teaches Watercolor and Drawing for Young People, Basic Techniques, Landscape and Still Life, Monday afternoons, 3:30 pm – 5:30 pm.
Joel Popadics has been a drawing and watercolor instructor for over thirty years. He teaches the principles of traditional painting and the importance of capturing light, mood and atmosphere in our work.
After graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the School of Visual Arts, he was hired as an assistant to one of his professors, James McMullan, a prominent illustrator and theater poster artist. McMullan, a gifted watercolorist and generous teacher, strongly influenced Joel’s approach to watercolor. He later studied landscape and portrait painting with John Phillip Osborne and Arthur F. Maynard.
Rick Perez teaches Drawing and Oil Painting for Adults: Beginner to Advanced Class Saturday 10:00am -12:30pm
Oil painting has always been Rick Perez’s passion. He has pursued it in the role of student, teacher, practitioner and judge to varying degrees. He spent the greater part of my time as a student at the NY School of Visual Arts and at the Art Students League (ASL) of NY. At the former, he studied under John Murray who was a proponent of the Riley Palette which is a pared-down, flesh-specific version of the more all-purpose, prismatic palette introduced by Frank Vincent Dumond and taken up by other influential educators after him, like Frank Mason and Arthur Maynard. He continued his studies at the ASL with many other influential teachers. From all of them, he synthesized somewhat of a personal approach of his own to going about painting. At the core of what he does as a painter, is a joy and excitement over the craft and the art of painting and drawing which he hopes to impart to his students along with the tools and concepts which will stand them in good stead on their development as artists.

Students of Joel Popadics and Rick Perez have been invited to submit three framed pieces of artwork for the fourth in a series of exhibits, showcasing student work done in classes here at the Ridgewood Art Institute. Students enrolled in both classes, may have submitted up to three pieces for EACH class. Also represented, are works by the instructors themselves. All levels of expertise will be represented, as classes at the Art Institute are taught on an individual basis and each student is taught in direct relation to their personal skill level. Work will either be offered for sale, or not. This is a wonderful opportunity for the community to see the beautiful work that is being generated here at the Ridgewoood Art Institute.
