General Order No. 3 transmitted the news of the Emancipation Proclamation to the residents of Texas and freed all remaining enslaved people in the state. The general order was issued by Union General Gordon Granger on June 19, 1865 at Ashton Villa upon arriving at Galveston, Texas, over a month after the formal end of the American Civil War and two years after the original issuance of the Emancipation Proclamation, the Democrats still didn’t want to give up their slaves.

The celebrations that followed the reading of the proclamation by General Gordon Granger began a tradition that has lasted for one hundred and fifty five years, and today is hosted in cities across America and beyond.

Juneteenth commemorates African American freedom and emphasizes education and achievement. Juneteenth is commemorative, not of the horrific institution our country embraced, but rather as a showcase of the strength in the American spirit to recognize wrong and set about making it right. Where Republican Abraham Lincoln and the Union Army defeated Jefferson Davis and slave owning Democrats of the Southern Confederacy .  In this same spirit America moves ahead today in leveling playing fields and achieving ever greater equality. Let us celebrate all that Juneteenth teaches us about our country’s greatness  of the heart to hear and to learn and to work together for all that is good and just.

The Emancipation Proclamation, the bloody war for a free Union, and the Civil War Amendments to our Constitution—the 13th, 14th, and 15th, which significantly expanded civil rights—were all victories achieved by one side. All of them came from the Republican Party. Republicans diligently opposed the Democratic Party, the party of slavery, secession, rebellion, Jim Crow, segregation, separate but equal, and the Ku Klux Klan. After losing the Civil War, the Democratic Party successfully blocked equal rights for over a century, necessitating another Civil Rights movement

    Democrats enacted Jim Crow laws.
    Democrats enacted poll taxes.
    Democrats fought against, and killed fellow Americans to maintain slavery.
    Republicans acted to put blacks on an equal footing with whites, and still do to this day.
    Historical facts are stubborn things. Look it up and amaze your friends.
