the staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood NJ, With Juneteenth quickly approaching, the Village of Ridgewood is preparing for a community-wide day of observance. While public holidays are an excellent time to reflect and spend time with family, they also mean a major disruption to your standard weekly routines.

To keep your week running smoothly and avoid leaving your bins on the curb on the wrong day, municipal officials have announced complete closures for all local government offices and sanitation services.

Here is the official closure schedule, what services are affected, how to track your adjusted trash pickup, and a look at the history behind this crucial federal holiday.

Complete Holiday Closures: Friday, June 19th

In observance of Juneteenth, the Village of Ridgewood will implement a full shutdown of public services on Friday, June 19th.

What is Closed:

  • All Village Offices: Standard administrative offices, municipal departments, and town hall services will be completely closed to the public.

  • The Ridgewood Recycling Center: The local drop-off center will be locked down for the duration of the holiday.

  • Sanitation Services: There will be absolutely no garbage or recycling pickup anywhere in the Village on Friday.

What Remains Open:

  • Emergency Services: As always, police, fire, and emergency medical services will remain fully operational 24/7 throughout the holiday weekend.

How to Check Your Adjusted Collection Schedule

Because Friday pickups are completely canceled, the sanitation department is adjusting collection routes for the entire week to ensure no neighborhoods are left behind.

To prevent missed pickups, residents are strongly urged not to guess their holiday route changes. Instead, utilize the following official resources to find your exact makeup day:

  1. The Recycle Coach App: Download or open the mobile app for immediate, address-specific notifications and real-time schedule adjustments for your zone.

  2. The Official Village Calendar: Check the master schedule provided on the municipal website for a complete breakdown of the altered holiday collection week.

What is Juneteenth? Explaining the History

While Juneteenth was officially designated as a U.S. federal holiday in 2021, its roots trace back more than 160 years.

Also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, Juneteenth (short for “June Nineteenth”) commemorates the effective end of slavery in the United States.

The History Behind the Celebration:

  • The Delayed News: President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, officially declaring all enslaved people in Confederate states to be free. However, due to minimal Union army presence, the executive order was not enforced in more remote regions.

  • June 19, 1865: It wasn’t until two and a half years later—on June 19, 1865—that Union Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas. He delivered General Order No. 3, officially informing the last remaining enslaved Black Americans that the Civil War had ended and they were free.

  • The Legacy: The following year, the newly freed people of Texas organized the first annual “Jubilee Day” celebration. Over the decades, the tradition migrated across the country, evolving into a national day to celebrate Black culture, honor the resilience of ancestors, and reflect on the ongoing journey toward true equality.

Make sure to double-check your sanitation zone before Thursday night, give your local public workers a break, and have a safe and meaningful holiday!

  1. Can someone please get president Trump to fix this holiday and amend it to be the first “teen” Friday of every June. The 19th is not specifically necessary.
