Ridgewood NJ, A fire that originated in the kitchen of a home located at 511 North Monroe Street in Ridgewood did little damage beyond destroying a microwave oven and adjacent cabinet, but filled the entire house with smoke.  The homeowner and her child had safely evacuated the structure prior to arrival of fire department personnel; no injuries to first responders were reported.  Ridgewood FD, EMS, and Emergency Services personnel all rushed to the blaze, which was reported via a 911 telephone call shortly before 6 PM on Monday.  North Monroe Street was closed between Morningside and Fairmount Roads while the blaze was extinguished.

  1. Thanks RFD and first responders for a quick response.
Imagine if volunteers had to drive to the firehouse in the rush hour traffic, then make their way back to the home with the equipment. It would have been a disaster, just like 2 weeks ago in Midland Park.
This is why the paid FD is worth every cent .

What’s your agenda ? Everytime there is a fire you post the same insults to our volunteers – strange you feel the need to justify the paid FD every chance you get. What’s up with that ? If we have a paid FD, they should do their job, and you should stop your bull.

  3. #2 calm down. No one is insulting the volunteers. Hopefully you will never need the FD at your house, but if you do your tune will change.

  4. Why does #1 have to have an agenda to make a point? seems to make sense.

Insults? Whats the matter, you failed the test? I’m a taxpayer glad to pay for the prompt response and they do a great job.
Is your agenda the constant bitching about the RFD? I think so!

  6. I moved here from Ohio in 2002 because my company asked me to work out of their NYC office. I chose Ridgewood because of the quality of the schools, safety of the community and small town feel yet being so close to NYC. I liked the fire department being a career department and I was surprised at the level of services Ridgewood offers. Yes, the property taxes are high but considering the level of service a resident receives it is well worth the cost.

  7. Responce time. Good thing there was a fire station right around the block !

  8. Maybe we should all go and cheer for commuters, too, as they trudge home off the 6:54 from Seacaucus. People, they’re just doing the job they are paid to do, like everyone else. This constant heroification implies that you feel the need to justify a paid fire department with multiple posts from the same fire fans trying to make it look like a conversation. Too bad James doesn’t call you out this, we know who you are.

  9. Why not ask the homeowner if that firehouse is a luxury. I bet she will tell you she can’t believe how fast the Fd was there !

If you look at your property tax bill, the reason they are ‘high’ is because the school budget is out of control and it about 2/3 of the bill.
Our ‘municipal’ portion, for police, rear yard garbage pickup, street sweeping/plowing, leaf pickup, recycling, and paid firefighters is actually LESS than towns that do not have paid FD and municipal sanitation services.

If you don’t like to wake up early to catch the train to NYC, you could have stayed living in Manhattan. But you choose to come here and bitch about some of the things that make the Village nicer than the other towns.

  12. The bottom line is the taxes are the taxes. You choose to move here knowing what the taxes and the services you get. It’s like moving next to a park all of a sudden it’s to loud. You have two options live with it or move. This argument has gone on for well over forty years.

  13. Ridgewood FD, expensive. Value of a life saved, priceless.
    Thank you RFD.

  14. 6 posts from the same person listing the union talking points on a blog post about people just doing what they are paid – very well – to do…. Of course you left out future the cost of pensions and healthcare, no surprise there. That adds billions to the bill in NJ. But let’s just ignore that, that’s not in the union play book. Seems odd you make these same comments every single time there is a fire ? Why does the union feel the need to justify the paid FD every single time there’s a fire alarm ?

I guess you failed to read the article above that we were commenting on: the homeowner and her child had safely evacuated the structure prior to arrival of fire department personnel.

A volunteer dept will show up with more manpower compared to Ridgewood any day……What was the disaster in MP? Please elaborate……there were two structure fires last year and both homes are able to be rebuilt with no injured parties….what’s the issue?

  17. SOMEONE SAID – A volunteer dept will show up with more manpower compared to Ridgewood any day.

Nice try but WRONG! If you need the FD on a weekday between 8 AM to 5 PM good luck with the vollies getting one rig on the road with 3 men and forget about anything else.

Vollies, thanks but no thanks if I want to gamble I will go to Atlantic City.

Nice paid advertising. What town in Ohio, and who was the Mayor in 2002?

  21. One of only four paid fire departments vs 69 “follies” in all of Bergen County. Pure Luxury.
